Essay Writing Technique 506495

Teacher: Prof. De Jonge Hugo

This pre-term course prepares new Harvey students for academic writing tasks and supports the transition to university study by strengthening planning and study skills.

Since short essays on medical and scientific topics are part of the assessment format in the Harvey Medicine Course throughout the programme, this course helps new students to understand what to expect and how to academically perform effectively and efficiently.

Essay Writing Technique is not a mandatory course, but it is strongly suggested if you need to focus on transition from a high-school study method to a university one.

What you will learn

  • How to write short essays on medical/scientific topics
  • Format, style, grammar, syntax, and clarity
  • Correct referencing and citation (avoiding plagiarism)
  • How to use reference managers, information databases, and academic resources
  • How to interpret exam requirements and expectations of review committees (and, later, funding bodies)

Why it matters

A key aim is to build awareness of academic expectations so you can prepare more effectively, understand course materials better, and perform more confidently in written assessments.
